The Four Orientations
Modern life pulls us in every direction.
The Living Compass was created to help us re-orient within the forces that have always kept us alive and whole — the four Orientations of Presence: Truth, Connection, Freedom, and Adventure.
The Living Compass model integrates the Orientations of Coherence (Truth, Connection, Freedom, Adventure) with our relational fields (SON) and modes of experience (PEMS).
At its center lies Coherence, expressed through the Core Capacities (TIVRA), which are practiced through presence across domains.
The counterclockwise movement reflects a return to alignment, a reweaving of self, others, and nature through embodied orientation.
Why These Four Orientations?
Throughout human evolution, these four have served as the essential bearings of coherence:
-
Truth kept us attuned to reality — sensing what is, not what we wish to see.
-
Connection bound us into relationship — with one another, the land, and the living world.
-
Freedom allowed creative choice and adaptation — the ability to respond rather than repeat.
-
Adventure carried curiosity forward — the impulse to explore, learn, and renew.
Together they form a living compass of orientation: a dynamic balance of perception, relationship, authorship, and vitality that has allowed every culture, ecosystem, and species to survive and thrive.When modern systems sever us from these bearings, disorientation spreads — in individuals, societies, and the planet itself.Re-entering them is not nostalgia; it’s recovery of the natural intelligence of being alive.

How the Compass Works
These fundamental orientations of human living aren’t abstractions or ideals to be understood — they are how we live each moment of our existence.
We experience these orientations in every dimension of life:
-
physically, through the body’s rhythm and breath;
-
emotionally, through feeling and relationship;
-
mentally, through the stories and meaning we create; and
-
spiritually, through the quiet sense of belonging to something larger than ourselves.
And we experience these orientations within every relationship we have — with ourselves, with others, and with nature.
And we experience them in every moment of our existence. In short, these orientations are fundamental to life itself. For more on the Life Model, click here.
The Compass helps us notice where we are, and what’s asking to come back into balance — not through control, but through awareness.
